Homosexuality may be related to genes

Australian researchers say that some people have a prejudice against homosexuals and think it is a matter of lifestyle choices, but research shows that homosexuality may be related to genetic makeup. A team led by Vincent Haley, a researcher at the Prince Henry Medical Research Center at Monash University in Australia, compared the genes of 112 gay men and 258 heterosexual men. The results found that 55.4% of gay men had longer androgen receptor genes, and 47.6% of heterosexual men had longer androgen receptor genes. Researchers say longer androgen receptor genes may lead to weaker signaling of testosterone, a key factor in determining the masculinization of gender recognition in the brain early in development. Research suggests that low testosterone levels may result in incomplete masculinization of the male brain during development, leading to gender perception tending toward women. This research report was published in the latest issue of the journal Biological Psychiatry.
